Breast Implant Reduction
Some patients choose to change their breast size after undergoing breast augmentation surgery. They may have chosen a larger size when they were younger and are now ready to have a more natural look so they consider removing their breast implants and replacing them with smaller breast implants. Each patient differs with the procedure that will be needed to achieve their goals. Sometimes the surgery is as simple as removal of the current breast implants and replacement with smaller breast implants. Sometimes, when reduction in size is wanted, capsulorrhaphy (internal sutures) and/or a mastopexy (breast lift) is also needed to remove or reconstruct excess skin that was stretched due to the larger implants or for better placement of the implants on the chest wall.
The Surgical Procedure of Downsizing Breast Implants with Mastopexy (breast lift) or Capsulorrhaphy (internal Sutures):
The procedure takes approximately 2-3 hours. Breast implant reduction/ breast lift surgery is usually performed in our outpatient surgical facility or in a hospital, depending on the size of the operation and the health status of the patient. New breast reduction techniques are now available that offer more limited scars. The choice of technique used depends upon patient age, goals and anatomy. The capsulorrhaphy procedure, also known as pocket correction or use of internal sutures, involves closing a portion of the breast pocket to correct displacement of the implant that may happen when downsizing.
“When I was eighteen I underwent breast augmentation because I was insecure about my body. I felt that breast implants would give me the confidence I lacked and ultimately make me happy. Bra shopping was a nightmare and when wearing a sports bra or bikini I was flat as a pancake. To my eighteen year old self I felt I was lacking something. Now eight years have passed and I am not the same person I was at eighteen. I am still young, but I feel fortunate to have discovered who I am and what I believe in, and what ultimately matters to me. I have been married for four years to a man who loves me for me. And just six months ago we had a beautiful baby girl. I had been thinking of having my implants removed for the last three years and being pregnant with them and breast feeding solidified my decision.
I had my implants removed three weeks ago and I feel liberated! Not only was my husband supportive of my decision, he also was encouraging throughout my appointments, surgery and the outcome of my body without implants.
I would encourage any woman who is toying with the idea of implant removal to do your research and come visit Dr.Pousti He is honest, professional and more than certified.”
